Good day, my dear Luminaries and students! Today, we’re going to talk about something very important – respecting our elders. Whether it’s our parents, grandparents, teachers, or even neighbors, God calls us to show honor and respect to those who are older and wiser than us. Let’s learn why respecting elders is not just a good habit but a part of living the life God wants us to live.
Bible Verse:
Let’s begin by reading a verse from the Bible. Ephesians 6:1-3 says:
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—”so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
This verse tells us that respecting and obeying our parents and elders comes with a promise from God: a long and blessed life.
The Parable of the Wise Tree:
Once upon a time, in a beautiful forest, there was a young sapling named Sprout. Sprout was lively and eager to grow tall. Next to him stood an old, wise oak tree named Elder. Elder had been in the forest for hundreds of years, and his branches stretched high into the sky.
One day, a strong wind began to blow through the forest. Sprout laughed and said, “Look at me! I’m small, but I’m strong. I don’t need anyone’s advice. I can stand against the wind on my own!”
Elder gently replied, “Sprout, listen to my words. The wind is strong, and the forest floor is uneven. If you lean on me, I can help shield you.”
But Sprout ignored Elder’s advice. The wind grew stronger, and Sprout’s roots began to wobble. Just as he thought he would be blown away, Elder stretched his mighty branches to shield Sprout from the wind. After the storm, Sprout was safe.
Humbled, Sprout said, “Elder, I thought I was strong enough, but your wisdom and strength saved me. I’m sorry for not listening to you.”
Elder smiled and said, “It’s okay, little one. Respecting those who came before you means learning from their wisdom. Together, we are stronger.”
Lessons from the Parable:
- Elders Protect Us: Just like the wise oak protected the sapling, our elders are here to guide and protect us.
- Elders Have Wisdom: They’ve lived through experiences we haven’t, and their advice can help us avoid mistakes.
- Respect Builds Relationships: When we respect our elders, it strengthens the love and trust in our families and communities.
Another Bible Verse:
In Leviticus 19:32, the Bible says:
“Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.”
This verse teaches us that showing respect to elders is also a way of showing our reverence for God.
Practical Ways to Respect Elders:
- Listen to Them: When they speak, give them your full attention.
- Help Them: Offer to carry something, open doors, or assist them when they need help.
- Use Kind Words: Speak politely and never raise your voice.
- Spend Time with Them: Sometimes, all they want is our time and attention.
Closing Message: Remember, respecting elders isn’t just about following rules. It’s about showing love, kindness, and gratitude for all that they have done for us. When we honor our elders, we honor God.
Let’s close with a prayer.
Activity:
Take an A4-sized sheet of paper and trace your hand three times. Yes, you can fit three palm outlines on the page! Now, think of three ways you can show respect to elders in your daily life. Inside each traced palm, write one idea using creative and colorful handwriting. Once done, decorate the page with your imagination—add drawings, patterns, or stickers—and proudly display it on your noticeboard as a reminder of how to honor and respect the elders in your life.

Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank You for the gift of elders in our lives. Help us to honor and respect them as You have commanded. Teach us to listen to their wisdom and be kind in our words and actions. Let our respect bring joy to their hearts and glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Go forth this week, remembering to show respect to the elders around you. God bless you all!
